Wisdom Teeth Extraction Q & A

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars that erupt in your mouth, completing your full set of permanent teeth. Wisdom teeth consist of four total teeth: One upper and one lower, on each side. Usually, wisdom teeth appear between the age of 17 and 25.

For many, wisdom teeth grow in normally and do not cause any problems. For some, wisdom teeth can grow in incorrectly, causing pain, infection, and misalignment issues for your other teeth. When this happens, a wisdom tooth extraction may be needed.

What is wisdom teeth extraction?

If one or more of your wisdom teeth cause a tooth impaction, you may need a wisdom tooth extraction. A tooth impaction happens when a tooth does not have room to fully erupt through the gum line, so it gets trapped in the jaw or under other teeth.

You may have a tooth impaction if your wisdom tooth:

  • Grows at an angle
  • Gets trapped in the jawbone
  • Is lying on its side, rather than straight up and down

This can cause several problems for your oral health, both in the short term and long-term. A wisdom tooth extraction is an oral surgery that removes the wisdom tooth entirely, relieving pressure on your other teeth, improving alignment issues, and improving any symptoms you may have. In most cases, the removal of all four wisdom teeth takes place at the same time.

What problems do impacted wisdom teeth cause?

As part of your routine dental exam at Key City Dental Studio, Dr. Key orders X-rays to help identify any impacted teeth before you have symptoms. Treatment of impacted wisdom teeth is often possible before problems arise.

The problems impacted wisdom teeth may cause include:

  • Pain and pressure in the teeth and jawbone
  • Increased risk for periodontal disease
  • Increased risk for tooth decay, especially for partially erupted teeth
  • Increased risk for abscess and infection
  • Misalignment of upper or lower sets of teeth
  • Damage to nearby teeth

If Dr. Key feels that your wisdom teeth are hurting your oral health, she will suggest removal. Wisdom teeth extraction is done under conscious sedation so that you are as comfortable as possible during your tooth removal.
